What My Animals Have to Say on Election Day
I awoke today to the sound of speculating hosts on a political radio program streaming out of my alarm clock. Who will be our next American President and how will that affect the world? Well, that was the sound, but the warmth of my cat next to my legs was the day’s first feeling. Upon my initial shuffle, she made her way out of the covers to my face, where she touched me with a soft paw and began purring loudly to show her contentment. After I exited my bed and headed down the stairs, I was greeted by my golden retriever with a wagging tail and aggressive brushing against my legs. My pets were happy to see me and happy to show me their love. What I am describing is known by “Dynamite people” because animals are our business and if you’re reading this, you likely have a similar story. But today in particular, I was struck by the juxtaposition of worried political experts on the radio against the unspoken calm and peace of my animals’ love.
Today is a big day in history, no doubt about that. We will elect a new president, and the American people will react. At a high level, we can expect change no matter who is elected because Americans of all walks of life are restless. History will be made today and at the same time, we would do well to allow the wisdom of our animals to bring us back to center. Allow their gentle ways to bring us back to what really matters and back to the things within our direct control. Let us remember that no matter who is elected today, we can and should make a positive difference in the many lives around us by being walking examples of peace and calm.
