My husband and I do a lot of work alone, so safety is always on our minds. Since we work in two of the most dangerous occupations – horses and logging – safety is even more important. Through the years I’ve treated more wounds on my ponies than I have on my husband, so it was a bit alarming when he came to me the other day and said, “You need to bandage my hand.” He had been using a grinder while doing repairs on his bulldozer, and it slipped and couldn’t get out of the way fast enough. The spinning abrasive disk cut through his glove and into the back of his hand below his index finger, miraculously missing bone and tendon but really messing up everything else.
When I first saw the wound, I immediately said it needed stitches, but I also knew that it was shallow enough and we are far enough from medical facilities that we could make do. That Don is a medic and has been an EMT (emergency medical technician) for many years also means he can make judgments about necessary care pretty accurately.
Don has a full med bag, of course, but since he asked for my help I went for my own vet box. I first irrigated the wound with Dynamite’s Wound Wash* then applied Trace Minerals Concentrate to stop the bleeding. I then packed the wound with Wound Salve before we applied a bandage over it.
Twice a day we repacked the wound with Wound Salve and re-bandaged it, and it really was amazing how good it looked when we looked at the wound on Day 5. No infection, just lots of healing skin and tissue. The picture (below) shows the wound at this stage; unfortunately I didn’t have the presence of mind to take a picture when the wound was fresh for a before-and-after comparison.
I’ve seen Dynamite’s first aid products do wonders on my ponies. Now I have a success story on a human wound, too!
